My Girlfriend is an Alien

Drama name:  外星女生柴小七  (Wài xīng nǚshēng chái xiǎo qī) - 28 EPISODES

Cast: Bie Thassapak Hsu as Fang Leng, Wan Peng as Chai Xiao Qi, Wang You Jun as Fang Lie

Language: Simplified Chinese/Mandarin

Story Line:

An alien girl reaches Earth in search of other life forms. She loses signal and hence stays till she finds her way back. During this time she crosses paths with an overbearing boss and they eventually fall in love. It is a hilarious yet emotional cross-star love story. But will their story end happily? Would the alien be able to live on Earth with her lover?

Characters:

The female lead, Xiao Qi has a fun-loving and carefree character. Unknown to what Earth is and how Earthlings are, she discovers various aspects of the human race. Played by Wan Peng, Xiao Qi is more than just an alien. She looks more like the girl from your neighborhood with uneven teeth, which makes her cute and adorable. It is this look that makes her authentic and pure. What makes this alien girl stand out from the other fantasy dramas is its varied physical features. I must say that Peng is a great actress. To act like someone who only knows high-tech codes, and telepathy, and is unaware of any Earthly thing is indeed a challenging task. She is natural and convincing.
The male lead, Fang Leng is young, talented, good-looking but cold and emotionless. Even then he has a warm heart towards his half-brother Fang Lie. Though Leng is well-known for his talent in his business circle, he lives with a disease no one knows about which brings him unbearable losses. Bie Thassapak Hsu, aka Bie kpn, has a unique aura. The way he appears on-screen and talks have a classy and bossy touch which, in my opinion, has been best portrayed by Bie.

Concern:

I am afraid you do not wanna use your brain much while watching this drama because there are unanswered questions and loopholes in some scenes. You would find it really senseless especially when an alien actually starts behaving like any other female human idol in some episodes. Also, it has an average OST.
Overall, it has humorous, romantic, feel-good, serious as well as sentimental elements. I remember crying for an entire day over an episode. Not kidding!

Verdict:

If you are a newbie and wanna step into the world of C/K-Dramas, this can be a good beginning. If you are worried about how to understand Mandarin, then fret not 'cause it is available for free on WeTV with English Subtitles!

It wouldn't be fair if I don't mention the one and only alien-ic being, Xiao Bu. It is an AI who came along with Xiao Qi and apparently lives on Earth inside the body of a tortoise. Xiao Bu is just A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !

Go, watch it, the sequel is to be released soon!

  1. Great review. I don’t usually watch K or C drama but I would love to watch this just for xiao Bu. Great work.
